Job offer negotiate starting salaryOK.. I was flown out by this company for my final interview and everything went great. They called me a week later with a verbal offer with the understanding that a written offer was in the mail. The verbal offer is $10K less than what I documented on my application. What is the proper way to negotiate? Do I find out who is making the decision, as far as the offer, and then write a letter to request a higher amount? Thanks.
I would call, it sounds as if it nothing more than a type o. Maybe they want to see how observant you are. Seriously I would contact the person who made the verbal offer and ask what happened did I misunderstand your original offer. Good Luck.
There is no typographical error. I filled out an application for the position, which I brought to the interview with me, and on it was a section to document what I was requesting for a salary. It was after that interview that I received a verbal offer on the phone for $10K less than what I had listed on the application. How is the best way to negotiate? The verbal offer was given from the HR person. Thanks
I apologize I misinterpreted your posting. What you stated as your requirements do not have to match the offer given that is not surprising to me. You can call the HR person and talk with them and find out why their offer is less than your requirement. I know when I offer someone a job I am not offended if they ask for more, frankly I expect it unless the person is coming with a substantial increase. You should also be able to ask the HR person if you can negotiate with the hiring manager, however, as an example in our org. the HR person will come back to me and tell me about the request and leave the decision up to me. The HR person then delivers the answer. Again Good Luck, Hopefully you can get some other opinions very soon.
Do you have anything to negotiate with? Do you have experience in your field? Do you have more education than is required? Do you bring a track record of success in your field? Are you working now? If this is an entry-level position, you aren't really going to be able to negotiate. If the number you picked was something pulled out of a hat (or off a salary survey) it may not be realistic. This employer feels that you're worth the number they quoted you. If you feel you can do better elsewhere, you're certainly free to look, but if you're just starting out, that may be the going rate. If you DO decide to try and negotiate, know that they can pull the offer all together and move on. If you still want to go ahead, start with ASKING (politely) if the offer is at all negotiable then see what happens. Tess
Yes to all your questions and this is not an entry level position. I would be supporting the Engineering for more than one plantsite. I am currently employed and would at least expect to make what I am now, not take a pay cut; which is what I would do if I accept their offer as is.
I think you need to call the person with whom you've had the most personal contact who may or may not be the person who told you what the offer was, and politely ask if the offer is negotiable and see what sort of answer you receive. If it's not negotiable, then it's just a "take it or leave it" proposition. If it is, be prepared to counter with a salary range that's reflective of amount on your application. BUT you also need to be able to justify that counter-offer on the basis of how closely your qualifications for the job match the requirements of the job. Make sense? Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert Folks, thanks for your insight; as I was able to negotiate effectively and receive the base salary I was shooting for! | |
