NegotiationI have been working for my current company for one year as the #### Controller. This company has been around for over 25 years and the current software they use is very old and out dated. Many report and analysis work was very manual, but when I begin working here I was able to implement new software, new data base, and new reporting tools to help analysis the business. I currently make $55k a year and with my review (which has not happen yet) I know for a fact that a 5% increase is all that my boss is handing out. Is it out of line to ask for 10%? I came up with 10% from looking at current openings around the area and I also know of other friends in the same line of work with the same job responsibility making $65k or more with annual bonus pay outs (did I mention my current company did away with bonuses). Any advice would help. Thanks,
I know historically in our organization 10% increases only come around in a blue moon and only if someone has been promoted or taken on additional responsibilities. That is not to say you should not ask. I would do my homework as to what you've accomplished for the company and work hard to sell yourself. Good Luck.
Thanks for the advice. My boss and I had our meeting and I got the 5% that I expect and it is not up for negotiation but he did list a few goals for the following year for me and was told that if I hit each one (which will take a bit of hard work but all are very doable) then I can expect a $10k to $15k increase next year.....But I have to ask myself, should I still stay and work for that year or should look out side the company? Any advice? If you think you're worth that much more then there's no harm in (quietly) finding out if that's true. If not, stay put, if you are, then take it.

I agree with TMSMALLEY I would quietly look around, unless you really like carrots. Good Luck
A 5% increase isn't bad and, frankly, more than most people typically receive, but you could quietly start a job search and see what sort of offers come your way. Just make sure that the job with the higher salary is really one you wan to accept. Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert | |
