Review and then promotion
In October 2006 I had my annual review and received a 4% raise. I just got a "promotion" to a new title and pretty much have the same responsibilities except I now have to give training seminars. I have not been told if a merit raise accompanies this promotion and quick frankly I think it should and if it doesn't I should have been told one way or another. I want to ask for a 7% raise based on my performance in the past year. Is this warranted? Am I right in asking for it? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.
The best thing for you to do is ask. If I were you, I'd go see the person who initiated the promotion and say something like, "I didn't ask before, but I presume that some sort of salary increase goes along with my promotion to X." Then see what sort of response you get. You'll either be told that the increase is Y% or you might be asked what sort of increase you have in mind, in which case you could say you were anticipating an increase in the 7% to 10% range based on the additional responsibilities of the new position. If the increase is less than 7% you could then politely ask if that amount is negotiable and, if it is, counter by saying you were anticipating an increase in the 7% to 10% range. The idea is to ask about an increase by presuming there is one, not by asking directly for an increase because you "deserve" it. Make sense? Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert | |
