Background Check

Can a background check reveal salary history?  Reason I ask is I recently received 2 offers and one was 3,500 less than the other.  The company that was lower does a background check so I put my real current salary on the application because I heard they can find out your past salary.  Because of this I think that is why they came in lower.  The higher offer company never asked for my current salary.  I really want to work for the company with the lower offer but I cannot see leaving 3,500 on the table so I counter offered with them but I don' t know if they are going to go up.

Depends on what you mean by "background check". Salary won't show up on a credit report or criminal records, but a n employer can certainly call a previous employer and ask what you made there.

IO don't know what salary level you are at, however $3,500 is probably within the salary range of most positions. You may have been offered the high end from one company and the low end from another, based on the company's needs.

If you have two legitimate offers, nothing wrong with counteroffering on the lower salary, as long as you don't mind missing out on the job completely if they pull the offer.

A "background check" is a very confusing term.  It means very different things to lots of people but, generally speaking, a previous employer won' t disclose what a former employee' s salary was, but that doesn' t mean the prospective employer can' t ask you to bring in a copy of a recent pay stub or a W-2.  You can always decline to do that, but the prospective employer can always decline to offer you the job if you don' t.

The background check I am talking about is if I have a criminal record and where I have lived.  Still waiting to here back on my counter offer.  I am running out of time and need to make a decision, at this point I feel if they wanted me bad enough they would have come up to where I wanted to be by now.  I am thinking I am probably better off going with the company that came in higher.  I know it is a good problem to have 2 offers on the table but this is one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.

Again, there are several types of court checks; there are county-specific court checks, state-wide checks, multi-state checks, just to mention the ones that come readily to mind.  Some can be done almost instantly, others can take a few days.  Checking where you live is done with a social security trace, which is an instant exercise.

Thanks everyone.  I went with the higher offer but not before a roller coaster ride.  The company that I countered with emailed this morning that they were willing to go up and for me to call them.  So before I get a chance to call them an hour later they send another email saying the corporate vp' s are in town and that they asked them to hold off on the decision for a couple of days unbelievable!!!  At this point I could not take the chance of losing the other offer.
