How do I not job hop
I am building a good track record and good reference. However, my first 2 jobs out of an MBA program are only going to be about 14-16 months each in tenure. The reason for job switches is due to VERY large salary increases of which I can only suspect of being drastically underpaid. Job 1 (16 Months tenure) Start: $40,000 Ending: $48,000 * I actually had to do some self promoting as I had been there for a year and initially only received a bump to $42,000. Job 2 (14 Months tenure) Start: $60,000 EndingL $63,000 * I still work here but just received another offer for $75,000. Summary: How in the heck can I justify not switching jobs with such drastic salary increases? Granted, I just recieved a Top Secret govt clearance of which the new job requires. It is in the back of my mind that I have some short tenures at the first 2 jobs out of grad school. However, there is no way to justify turning down big salary increases just to build tenure? Given the circumstances, I think you can understandably take the new job. BUT, plan on sticking it out there; do NOT switch jobs again for 3 to 5 years. If you do another year, year and a half stint, you are jeopardizing your future, IMHO. So, be sure you really want and would like and would be happy at this new job--regardless of the money. Don't take it just for the money; what if you end up hating it? Once you're several years into your career you won't necessarily need to list these early jobs on your resume (but you will, of course, on a formal job application). But you're gonna need a couple of very long-term positions to avoid looking like a job hopper.... I agree with Anne Marie. I think you can take the $75K job, but I strongly urge you to stick with that job for the next few years, no matter what else comes along. For example, if you're offered $90K a year from now to take another job, I honestly believe you have to decline it to show some stability on your resume - or you will be labeled a job-hopper and your upward climb will come to a drastic halt because no one wants to hire a job-hopper who is has a track record of leaving as soon as a few more bucks are dangled in front of his/her face. A couple of job changes right out of grad school aren't too bad. I just don't think you can do it a third time, so take the offer for $75K and stay put! Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert The simple answer is to stop looking. Don't look for other jobs, you probably won't find them. If one does find you, you say, not right now but I'll keep you in mind for the future.
