Salary Negotiations

I applied for (and was hired!) by my "dream job/dream company". Pre-interview, the H.R. Director asked what my salary range was... I told her. She said that was right in their range. When they offered me the position at less ($2 per hour less): I accepted it. I did ask a little about raises, and once my evaluation period was over if I could expect a raise. I never tried negotiating the wage at all.

I begin working on Monday 3/5. I am thinking to mention my disappointment with their offer, maybe ask why they offered less, and ask for when to expect evaluations and if I will then be making what I was led to expect pre-interview. The thing is: what they offered me was the (unstated) lowest of what I'm willing to work for. And being my dream job: I would have been ecstatic had the previous discussion and expectations not occurred.

The problem is: I'm one of those unfortunate souls that believes dedication and hard work is noticed by management and will be rewarded on merit, and so I've never requested a raise or negotiated a salary or anything. Any suggestions for how to go about negotiating NOW, or is it pretty much too late? I do have an employment specialist working with me. She is going to call the HR Director and mention she heard I was hired, and bring up the fact that the company can be re-imbursed 50% of training costs and try negotiating my wages higher. As she has the negotiation skills I lack, I feel she would have better success. What is your opinion???

In response to your actual question, yes, I think it's pretty much too late to try and negotiate a higher salary now.  They made and offer and you accepted it.  I think you could ask when performance and salary reviews take place, but I think it would be a serious mistake to suggest that when a review does take place that you'll be expecting an increase equal to what you were supposedly led to believe you were going to be offered.  You weren't told that you would receive the salary you mentioned, but that it was merely within their range.  You were offered a salary, apparently, at the low end of that range.  What you should have done at the time was ask if the initial offer was negotiable or not, but it's too late to do that now!  Let the "employment specialist" see what she can do, and ask when performance and salary reviews are ordinarily scheduled.  If it's 6 months from now, do the best job you can between now and then and keep track of what you've accomplished so you can document your overall job performance when the time comes to talk about performance and salary again.  Make sense?
