Can I ask for a raise when I add staff
I'm currently a manager with no direct reports. When I add staff, is it acceptable to ask for a raise?
Not until you've had some time under your belt and proven you are doing a great job managing others. You don't get a salary increase simply by having another person added to your responsibilities. You earn it by demonstrating you are more than up to the task.
If I were you, I'd wait until I'd been supervising the work of others for at least 90 days before asking for a performance and salary review. As Anne Marie wrote, prove you can handle the extra responsibility - and handle it well - before asking for more money. Not to be blunt, but earn the increase based on your performance in the newly defined role. Make sense? Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert | |
