Lowest Paid Exec Asst in Corp OfficeI work at the corp office of a company I do know that I am the 2nd lowest paid assistant there. However I have several years of administrative experience. 2 of the assistants are a bit older than me but one is not and she is in school (geting a MBA). I am the assistant for two different departments and I feel I have to be doing equal to or more work than the other assistants. Our company is going through a great degree of change and I was wondering how I could address this difference in pay without being seen as negative. Any suggestions? Well, to begin, you can't address the difference in pay between you and others. What they're paid, with no disrespect intended, is none of your business. What you can do, however, is prepare a list of your own accomplishments - goals met, objectives achieved, additional responsibilities assumed, initiatives taken - anything that will clearly show that you're not just doing a good job, but more than the job requires. Once you have your list, request a performance and salary review with whomever the appropriate person happens to be. Take two copies of your list, one for you and one for the person with whom you're meeting. Make it clear that based on your OWN performance, you feel an increase in salary is in order. If you're asked how much, reply with a range. Say something like you were anticipating an increase in the 5% to 10% range and see what sort of response you receive. The bottom line is salary increases are based on what we individually contribute to the cause, not on fairness or on what other people are supposedly being paid. Make sense? Paul W.
