Interim position at work...salary help!

I am currently working in a coordinator position (a position right underneath the Director position of a department)...my boss (the Director) has just accepted a new job and she informed me that our boss is going to be asking me to "step up" and perform my job, along with some of the Director responsibilities.

My question is this: How do I politely go about negotiating additional monetary compensation for taking on extra responsibilities as an interim director (i.e., how do I say to my boss that I would like additional compensation?)  In addition, HOW MUCH should I ask for?  I' m not even sure how I would figure out what would be an appropriate amount of compensation to ask for (do I ask for a certain % of my former director' s salary?  Do I simply ask for a lump sum?  I' m not sure how to calculate how much compensation I should even ask for)

People don' t get raises or bonuses or monetary compensation for taking on additional duties for a brief period of time, even if that time is a few months.  What you get is the chance to prove you can work at that higher level, the chance to show you' re a team player and the notice of those above you who will be looking at you for the next step in your career.

Not to be too blunt, but I think you have to prove you can handle the additional duties for at least 90 days, if not for 6 months, before asking for a performance and salary review.  After a reasonable period of time, you' ll have a much better idea of what the extra duties really are, now successful you' ve been carrying them out, and what % increase in compensation makes sense.  Asking for an increase now, in my opinion, would be totally inappropriate.  You need to demonstrate what you can accomplish in order to justify additional compensation.  Make sense?
