vacation soon after starting new job

i sent my resume, not actually anticipating a response-just thought i should start the search process. everything is happening so quickly. after the interview I received a follow up call for a conditional job offer {pending background cks etc}. I have also been given a start date and a second meeting to discuss salary, etc. My question is this: i have had a 2 wk vacation planned since last summer, paid for, no refunds. this will be almost exactly 2 months after my start date. when should i tell the employer?? after i have negotiated salary in the HR meeting this monday? I don' t want to be hired, then let go. Don' t want to lose this job opportunity either. just returning to the job market after 5 yrs. please advise. thanks

As soon as you have most of the details about the job worked out and clearly in mind, but before you accept their offer, just say that there' s one other issue you need to bring up - and then mention the vacation that' s been planned, paid for, and non-refundable and express the hope that it won' t be a problem, adding that you would expect to take the time as an unpaid leave of absence - also mention that you realize that it could be in inconvenience and how sorry you are about it but, again, expressing the sincere hope that it won' t cause a problem and how much you' re looking forward to the job.  I really wouldn' t expect a problem if you' re candid and forthcoming about the situation up-front.

I agree with Paul. I have had several new hires tell me they had vacations already planned. But since they had the background I was looking for, I told them "No problem!". These two employees are two of my best sales people.

Ditto that- I think its very acceptable for new hires to have vacations already planned-  and most new employers will be ok with that.  Telling the employer before you actually accept the position is critical though- you need to be up front about it.  And if they have a problem with that- think about how much time it saved you to find out now that the company is not good to their employees!

Thanks to all for the advice. I did as you suggested Paul, and the HR rep mentioned that i was not the first of the new employees to have discussed vacation plans.  I begin my first day of training tomorrow.
