Forgot about old misdemeanor!

I have been contracting at a large Aerospace firm and recently applied for a permanent position.  I have received an offer and plan to accept, but on my application I stated that I have not had any misdemeanors in the last 7 years.  However, now that I think of it, I did receive a misdemeanor, which I believe was in the fall of 2000, for a Minor in Possession of Alcohol.  I wasn't trying to lie about it, I just thought it was in January of 2000, but I'm pretty sure I was wrong now.  How should I proceed?  I was thinking the best way would be to contact my HR person and let her know that I might have made a mistake.

Thank you all,

-Sean

My advice would be to call and explain the unintentional mistake.  A misdemeanor illegal possession of alcohol change when you were a minor nearly seven years ago really isn't a very serious offense, but rather than have it show up on a court check and make you appear to be less than honest, I'd call and explain the mistake.  I can't imagine being honest about it will hurt your chances of getting the job.  NOT explaining what happened could, however, hurt your chances, even though it's a very minor offense.

Thanks Paul.  I met with my HR contact today and she seemed okay with it.  She was glad I "came forward" beforehand, in her wording.  We still set a start date and are moving forward so I think it won't be an issue.

This just reiterated to me how one little mistake could change your life.  If I had done some of the things my friends at the time were doing, I might have lost my student loans, never graduated college, and never have my current job.  I guess Mom was right after all.

I'd like to send this thread to Paris Hilton, not that she'll ever be negotiating a salary;o)

No, but she does need to learn how to behave and be a responsible adult, like our OP learned!!!!

Goes to show you that not having to work for anything is a bad, bad, bad thing. As is too much money and too much time to get in trouble with it! Ah, why must wealth be wasted on the wealthy?

Good for you.  Now, go back and finish eating your vegetables...
