Salary Question Expectation in Email

I received an e-mail from a recruiter that specifically asked me what my salary expectations were for the job.  How do I respond?  Do I ask what the salary range for the position is over e-mail? Or do I call up and ask over the phone?

First, is this an outside recruiter or the company's recruiter?

If it is an outside recruiter, just tell them. Why waste their time and yours pursuing jobs that are not going to meet your salary requirement?

If it is a company recruiter, you can either (a) refuse to tell them, in which case they may just move on to someone else, (b) explain that you don't know enough about the job responsibilities and benefits so you can't give a good answer, in which case they may explain more and expect your answer, or (c) just tell them a range.

If the question was asked via email, it is acceptable to answer via email. If it gets into a negotiation, do it in person or on the phone.

I almost totally agree with Chet.  If it were me, however, and I had a realistic salary range in mind, in which I knew I wanted or needed to be, I'd provide it for the same reason - there's no sense in wasting your time and theirs if there's never going to be a "meeting of the minds" on a mutually acceptable salary range for this job.  For instance, if you have a job now, the generally accepted rule is that it ordinarily makes no sense to switch jobs unless you can increase your salary by at least 10% to 15%.  If that range - 10% to 15% more than your presently earning is to rich for this employer's blood - you probably don't want the job if it's going to pay less than your presently earning, and they're probably not going to increase the salary beyond their budgeted range.  Make sense?
