TEMP TO HIRE/LONG HOURSI currently work for a consulting company as a computer programmer. My current assignment is a temp to hire position at a health insurance company. I am being considered for permanent employment. Ever since I've worked there I have been working an average of 10 hours a day. Noone else does my job so I have to do it all. I feel like I'm doing the work of 2 people. I am under constant pressure. I did not anticipate these working conditions and wonder if I should ask for a raise if they decide to hire me. A raise does not shorten your hours. If they decide to offer you a full time permanent job, you should consider if you're really willing to work those hours day in and day out for the next year or two.
Tess Not to duck the question you're asking, but if I were you, I'd wait until an offer of permanent employment is made before doing anything. See what the offer contains in terms of salary and benefits. It's also possible that your work schedule will change as a full-time employee. If the offer that's made is one you'd otherwise be happy to accept - accept it! If the days continue to be ten hours at a stretch after you've been there a month or two, then sit down with whomever you report to and ask if some adjustment in the hours can't be made. More money, as Tess points out, may not be the solution if it's the length of time you're working that's getting you down. On the other hand, if the salary offer isn't quite what you expected, you can always ask, politely, if their initial offer is negotiable and see what they say. If it is, you'll need to be prepared to counter with a salary range that's reasonable - but we can talk about that, if you like, what you get the offer. Hope this helps. Paul W.
