Salary Question BEFORE InterviewI'm not sure how to best handle this situation. I received a message today regarding a recent job I applied for. In my field there is a pretty large range for salaries. I am currently on the high end of the range. I want to return the call to set up the interview, but don't want to waste their time or mine if the salary range for the position is significantly lower than my current one. Should I bring this up before taking time to go there? How would I do so? Or, should I just go and see what happens? Thanks Sure! What I'd do is call and say I was interested in setting up a mutually convenient time for an interview and, as that's unfolding, casually ask what sort of salary range has been budgeted for the position, adding that you're currently earning $X and see what happens. If there's no way their range comes up to $X, you might want to politely suggest that, if that's the case, it probably doesn't make much sense to get together for either of you since your're anticipated salary range would be at least 10% to 15% more than you're earning now. On the other hand, you can go to the interview and essentially follow the same procedure, if you're curious to know more about the job and what it might be like. Either way, there's no point in wasting your time - or theirs - if there's never going to be a "meeting of the minds" regarding salary. Zat help? Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert Thank you. My mom recently was offered a job and asked for a higher salary based on some feedback I received from this site. She was offered 10% more!
