possible job offer

Please help!  I was recently layed off from a company, where I was making an excellent salary had outstanding benefits.  Unfortunately there is only one other company (company A) in town that offers similar positions for my profession (engineering).  Fortunately, I landed an interview with company A for a position within that will most likely offer me similiar benefits and salary.  The interview went well.   Here is my dilemma - I was just offered a job (with a much smaller company) for about $15,000 less than my previous annual salary, which is 25 miles away.  I need to give them an answer by the end of the week. I most likely will not hear back from company A before then.  I would much rather work for company A, however Company B is a sure thing.  If I don't accept the offer with company B, and I am not offered the job with company A,  I will most likely have to commute more than 1 hour each way to another city to find work.

Would it be terrible to accept the offer from company B and then quit if I receive an offer from company A?

Pls help ASAP.

Thanks,

RJ

You would not be the first person to accept a job and then back out. If the number of opportunities in your area are that small I would, however, be hesitant to do this to company A.

I suggest calling company A and explain that you have an offer but would much rather work for them and ask whether they could have a decision by the end of the week. If they can't, accept the smaller company's offer and maybe company A comes through before you start your new job.

Remember, you (a) don't have an offer from company A and (b) even if they do make an offer it may not be an acceptable one so you probably don't want to pass on an offer in hand.

I essentially agree with Chet.  All I would add, however, is that my approach to company A would be more along the lines of seeking their "help" and asking them if there's any way they can accelerate their hiring decision because you'd much prefer working for them.  The point, I think, is trying to enlist their help in resolving this problem - sort of a "is there anything 'we' can do to remedy this situation" approach.  Depending on what A says, you might not have a choice but to accept the other company's offer rather than run the risk of having no offer on the table at all.

Thank you for the advice. I did ask company A if they would be able to give me an answer by the end of the week. They did not think that it would be that soon. They have a specific procedure they need to follow to evaluate candidates, and he didn't feel it would be completed by the end of the week.  Company B needs a decision by the end of the week.  I will accept the offer with Company B, and wait to hear from Company A. If any reasonable offer is made, I will most likely take it.

Thanks again.
