Need serious advice

I work for in accounting in my company and we have 5 employees.  As far as I know, we all got very good year end reviews.  3 of us are degreed and 2 are not degreed.

I am also doing payroll as something I was not hired for but I acquired through necessity and no one else to do it at the time.

4 in the department have been there for more than a year.  Me, another accountant, and the 2 clerks.  It has come to my attention that everyone other than me has received a 12% raise while I received an 8% raise.

Would it ever be acceptable to start a salary negotiation with the following or in this vein:  "It has come to my attention that the department had a standard raise for very good reviews of 12% and I'd like to either be bumped up to 12% or at least have it explained why I did not receive the average of 12%?"

Something along those lines.  I would never discuss actual dollar amounts, but could it be acceptable to ask why my raise was not equal that of the other percentages if we all received very good reviews?

Thanks in advance.

Well, let's start with the general notion that what other people are supposedly being paid really isn't any of your business - no offense intended.  It's also possible that you're earning more than the others and your 8% increase could translate into the same dollar increase the others are receiving with a 12% increase.  Another point: regardless of the size of the company, office rumors are notoriously unreliable when it comes to things like who's earning how much, who has how many vacation days left, who left early, and all that nonsense.  My point is there could be a dozen reasons for the difference, assuming there really is one!  An 8% increase is a very nice increase.  I would not rock this particular boat by mentioning it to anybody.

An 8% raise is nearly triple what most companies are giving (3%).  I'm not sure I'd make a stink over that.  And it is none of your business what someone else gets paid.  They may have gotten 12% of a lot less money than your base.

You're getting a nice raise for the work you do.  I wouldn't come off ungrateful, especially in such a small business where the boss will probably take it very personally.

Your mileage may vary.

I'm not quite sure...

From your question... it seems you have "volunteered" to take on additional responsibilities for which you are not being compensated for. Correct me if I'm wrong. I you were 'forcibly' elected to the position... tell the powers that be , that the additional work is interfering with your required tasks. Do not give them an ultimatum, but DO  mention the additional work you are doing, occasionally.

Record your regular hour plus your additional {seperately} hours [record projects you are required to complete and the additional hours spent during the duration of those projects].

You might have to tough it out for a little bit.

    Thanks for the replies!

Due to the brevity of my post, I didn't put everything in.  I don't think it would make a difference.

I am well aware of 8% being good! That was my dilemma because I know that is high and that it's a great raise.  I was thinking from the lines of of all the employees in the same department, I'm the only one singled out for a lesser raise.  I guess it goes to "If I'm doing something that is making it less (and I'm the middle person in the mix meaning I don't make the most or the least), then let me know what I need to do to bring me up to that level".  I've never been told I do a bad job and like I said received a very good review.  It makes me feel like they don't appreciate me as much as the others, but then again it is an 8% raise.

I do know exact numbers and I realize it is a big no no to compare XXX dollars to XXX dollars.  That was why I purposely spoke about percentages.

I'm also dealing with a work bully issue with one of the people so there are a lot of other factors, but I do appreciate the replies.
