move into managementhow much is too much to ask for when you move from within into a management position? 10% salary increase? According to salary.com I am at the very high end for my current position in terms of salary. A 10% salary increase would bring me only to the 25% percentile for the area in terms of the new management position. I'm hoping for more but is that fair of me to ask having never been in management before (though the new management position i've technically done for the last 2 years but on a dotted line basis, not 100% responsible as I will be soon). thanks for any words of wisdom offered
Not to be blunt, but I honestly don't think you're going to be asked how much you expect to be paid, but told what the salary offer is. If I were you I'd be anticipating an offer that's about 10% to 15% more than you're earning now. If the actual salary offer is lower than 10%, I think you can politely ask if the offer is negotiable and see what they say. If it's not, I'd still be really inclined to take the job because opportunities to move into management positions don't come along all that often and if you decline this one, you probably won't get another chance to move up again. Nevertheless, let's suppose you're offered a 5% increase and you ask if the offer is negotiable and you're asked what salary you have in mind, I'd say I was anticipating an increase in the 10% to 15% range and see what they're response is. BUT you also have to be fully prepared when you state your counter-offer range to highlight why the JOB for which you're being considered with be worth that much more to the employer because you're in it - based on things like your experience, training, past job performance, skills, and education. In other words, your challenge will be to show how your qualifications for the job are a great match for the requirements of the job! Make sense? Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert thank you - they did offer me just above 10% so i'm okay with that. thank you though for letting me know what to expect. they left the clause open that as my dept grows (and it is expected to quickly) there's room for groth. their words not mine.
anyway thanks Good for you! Now show 'em what you can accomplish on the job so you can grow with the department as it grows! Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert | |
