Negotiation of an offer
I have two current offers extended to me. Both are similar in the job, one offer is 4K higher, but the other job I know will not go that high. I feel like the match is with the lower offered position so I would really like to take that one. My question is, if I counter offer and ask for a $2K signing bonus, will that scare them off?
I wouldn't do it. Here's why: 1. You don't ask for a signing bonus. If they want to do one, they offer. 2. You don't assume they will negotiate. You start by (politely) asking. 3. The difference between the two jobs is something like $1.20 an hour after taxes. That's hardly enough to risk the offer over, so, if you want the first job, take it.
Tess
From my experience, I would definitely accept the one that I KNOW I would feel more comfortable with. It really isn't all about the money! Good Luck...
Its really not all about the money. But the other half of that is that money should be a big part of it. If you are eating pata every night then I don't care how great a fit you are in a company, you are not going to be happy.
I agree pasta every night can be boring and harmful to your health. My point was for a couple thousand dollars, I would definitely go for the environment that fits my personality where I am allowed to express my opinions openely. I am speaking from experience, stuffy environments are stressful and just not worth the extra buck an hour! I tend to agree with Tess. I think you could politely ask if the lower offer is negotiable and see what they say. If it's not, I'd be tempted to take lower paying job - money isn't everything and a $4K difference really isn't much per paycheck after taxes. If the lower offer is negotiable, counter with a range that's $4K to $6K higher than their offer and see what happens. One other point, signing bonuses are offered, but they're never requested. Asking for a signing bonus will just make you look like you don't know what you're doing - no offense intended. Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert | |
