Merit Increase

Next week my boss will be conducting my annual review. I know that the company has been handing out 5% merit increases this year and I know that currently that’s about what the average is. But I also know that a person with my job skills and back ground the average yearly income is $10K more then what I would be making after the 5% merit increase. And I currently travel 60 miles round trip to work and back, with the ever increasing gas prices it’s hard for me to justify just a 5% increase.

I would like to know how to ask for more then the 5% or possibly other some other form of benefit. My boss has told me that when he spoke to his boss (when he first started working here) he was able to get a monthly car allowance for his travel time to and from work. He travels the same distance as I do. So would this be something I can ask for and if so how?

If I were you and I was offered a 5% increase, I' d start by asking if the percentage is negotiable and see what sort of response you get.  If it is, you could counter by saying that based on your performance you were anticipating an increase in the 7% to 10% range and see what happens.  If the percentage isn' t negotiable then you could bring up the travel allowance that your boss received as a substitute - normally how far people have to commute to work isn' t the employer' s problem and I wouldn' trecommend bringing it up, but this situation sounds like the exception to the rule, so if the percentage increase isn' t negotiable, just ask if, in the alternative, a travel allowance would be possible.  Hope this helps.

Its just that I keep getting calls from people about other jobs for the pay i would like but i would like to stay with this company for two years so that it looks better on my resume....
