Is this the right time to askMy company is downsizing through early retirement offering and layoffs. My department is going from 11 down to 3 people, no layoffs, all retiring. I am the admin assistant for the group. In addition to my own duties, I will be picking up alot of the duties of 5 retirees. These duties were performed by people that had a higher pay range than I have. Is this a good time to ask for a raise, or should I consider myself lucky to have more job security? Thank you for your time and consideration. Assuming you're asking this question seriously, I'll answer it seriously. No, during a downsizing is NOT the time to ask for a raise. I'm guessing that's 'nuff said.
Tess Since your company is apparently downsizing big time - I'd call your department going from 11 to 3 big time downsizing, my guess would be that your company is either experiencing a significant drop in sales or somebody is cutting expenses to the bone for whatever reason - this would seem like a very bad time to ask for a raise. I'd take on the extra duties and do the best I could to demonstrate my ability to handle the extra work load for about six months, see how things go, and then ask about a performance and salary review.
