Phone Interviews

I am curious to know what eeryone thinks about phone interviews. I had my 1st one today, thanks to MONSTER.com!! Just curious to know how it will factor into me moving forward into the next phase. I felt that it was a little misleading because it seem to go to well, and I thought, "How much can this guy really find out about me over the phone?"

Generally speaking, the first phone interview is designed to collect some basic facts and some basic impressions - but that's about all.  A phone interview can show how articulate you are.  How well informed you seem to be, and if you provide the "right" answers to the questions that are asked.  Sometimes people feel they can form an impression about what a person is like over the phone.  I have my doubts about that, but no matter how well it seemed to go, it's still just a phone interview - a basic screening device and usually nothing more.

These days phone interviews are very common, especially for the first screening.  They're quicker for the interviewer, therefore more cost effective.

It isn't unusual, however, to have some or even all of the subsequent interviews by phone too.  Many companies have staff all over the place these days.  I used to work out of SF.  My boss is in San Diego.  I now work out of Portland and my assistant is in Phoenix.  I support 10 locations in 8 states.  When I hired my assistant, we did all his interviews over the phone then just had one final face to face meeting.  I spend my days on conference calls with people all over the country.

So, if the culture of the company is comfortable with working over the phone, they can find out pretty much everything they want to know that way.  If it isn't something that they do as much, they'll bring you in to have a look at you.

For temp contract jobs, phone interviews are all they do.  I even had one job offer with no interview.  That one really suprised me.  The job shop called and said they had a job.  I asked when the client wanted to do a phone interview, she said they don't they read your resume and want to know when you can start.  She said this particular client did this all the time with engineering jobs.  They aren't a small player either, it was a division of Lockheed.
