salary range or specific
A potential employer emailed me this question "What are your salary expectations for the position of computer support?" I plan to answer it with the following. "I am looking for a salary between 53k to 60k based on a full understanding of the postion and the entire benefit package." My current salary is 50k. Perhaps I should say "My expectation would be 53k based on a full understanding of the position?" Pleae note that I haven't had an interview with the potential employer. According to the salary wizard, computer support in this area of the country have a median salary of 42k for a bachelors and 0 - 2 years experience. A computer support II median pay is 50k with 3 to 5 years. I have a bachelors with 6 years experience, with 3 specific to this type of support. I've changed the specific title as current and/or potential employer may be reading the board! Your response was correct, however you logic is a little off. Assuming all other things equal, why would you change jobs for as little as 6% increase in pay? Seems like you are short changing yourself. In addition, rather than looking at salary sites you should be looking at other ads in your area for jobs that require the same or similar education and experience and see what they are paying. That will give you a more accurate picture of what salary you could expect. If I were you, I'd write something like, "My salary expectations are negotiable within the $55K to $65K range, based on a more complete understanding of requirements of the position and what's contained in the benefit package." The general rule is it's not worth switching jobs unless the salary is AT LEAST 10% to 15% more than you're earning now. With your qualifications, I think you can justify a $10K range for negotiation purposes. Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert | |
