Current Salary Question

I have recently been interviewing for a job that during the first phone interview asked me what my current salary was.  I panicked and answered an amount higher than what I am currently making.  I have been offered, and have accepted, the new job with a salary that is good.  Now they want to do a background check which includes a line referencing my current salary (among other things) and asking for my approval to my employer to release this information.  I know I messed up when I answered a different salary than what I am making but what do I do now?  Leave the line blank?  Please help!

So you lied about your salary and now you want to know what's going to happen?  Chances are good they're going to find out and you're going to be back to job hunting.  That's really all there is to it.

It is a very dumb thing to lie about since it is the most easily checked thing there is.

There's only one other option.  Immediately call the person with whom you talked and say something like, "When we first talked and you asked about my present salary, I was caught a little off guard and mis-spoke.  I said my salary is $X, but it's actually $Y.  I just wasn't thinking and blurted out an incorrect amount and thought I ought to clear that up right away."  Or words like that.  Never, even thoughtlessly lie about anything associated with your employment.  Most employers don't want to hire liars, even if it's an honest mistake.
