what percent increaseMy current company just decided to promote me (after I made clear that I was bored and couldn't go on like that) and are offering a 10% salary increase. I accepted but haven't officially started yet. At the same time, and although I hadn't been actively looking, I was contacted by a recruiter and interviewed for a job which is also a promotion from where I am now. It went very well and I'm very likely to get an offer from company #2. There are pros & cons in both jobs and doing a fair evaluation of both will be tough. So the questions are: 1. Company #2 knows about the promotion. If they are serious about hiring me, what kind of % increase should they offer? 2. Do you have any other advice for a situation like that? If I wasn't being promoted at my current company, company #2 would be a no-brainer. But now I'm in a better situation and need some advice to make the best decision. Thanks! "...what kind of % increase should they offer?" It's normally recommended before changing jobs to seek a 10% to 15% increase in salary, all else equal (it also depends on the level of salary in part). My only further advice is to avoid playing off one company against another - if you do accept an offer from the second company, then don't expect to keep on working for the first company. Congratulations and good luck. It would be a terrible mistake to try and play you present employer off against a prospective employer. Company #2 is going to offer whatever they're going to offer. You either like the offer or you don't. I think you should wait and see how this all plays out and, if you want to, let us know what both offers turn out to be. Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert Hi- after going to the final interviews, I ended up telling the recruiter that the new job at my current company sounded like a better opportunity (both jobs are challenging but different). I did this without even letting company #2 make an offer. Two days later, recruiter calls back saying that Company #2 doesn't want to let go and want to have a final call with me. Since I was still second guessing my decision. I accept. When I get on the phone, the HR person starts saying that they moved on and is almost bashing me but yet still asks me what I need to know to change my mind. That was 2 days ago. I haven't heard back from them yet. Not sure what to think... Second question: I'm still open to this job. But if I were to negotiate salary, I would want a salary increase. Should my requirement be an increase on my [base+bonus] or just [base]? My current company is doing great and bonuses have been doubles the last few years. New company doesnt have this bonus structure, so if I ask for an increase on total compensation, my new base may go up by 20%+. Is this weird? If I were you I'd accept the promotion with your present employer and let the other situation go. But if you want to see how far the possibility of a job with the second company can go, tell 'em that your anticipated salary is negotiable in a range that's 20% to 25% more than your new base salary plus the average bonus tacked on top - that's assuming you hear from their recruiter again. Either way, seems to me you're in a win-win situation based on what you wrote. Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert | |
