Big Mistake

I was about to be laid off and could not afford to be out of work. After a pretty long search I finally got an offer. I told the new company what my current salary is, and they explained that they wouldn't be able to match it "at first". (my salary is significantly more than the offerd base. Like at least 35% more)  -- I was also told that they would "try" to increase my base salary by a few K more than slated for this positon.

After jumping through all of the  hoops, they made an offer and I accepted. The trouble is when the offer came, there was no increase in the base salary. I accepted anyway since, as I said, I just cannot afford to be out of work. Now, I regret it. I am due to go in on Monday for HR paperwork, etc. Would it be acceptable to mention that although I accepted the offer, I would like to discuss the previously mentioned increase in base salary? How do I bring it up? What do I say?

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

I think at this point, the offer is what it is.  Unless you're willing to back out of this all together, you're stuck for a while.  Since it took you months to find this job, and you really need the paycheck, I wouldn't push it.

While you're in the new job, however, you can and should be on the prowl for something better and closer to your former salary.  It is much easier to find a job when you have a job.

Since you need the income, I think  you should go ahead and take the job and, at the same time, quietly keep your job search going until you find something better.  I don't see another choice - at the moment.
