Career Tips

future value

I have be offered a promotion out of state with my current company. The move could benefit me 2 yrs from now in the form of another promotion. That 2-year window is not guaranteed, but it would get me to about 20K more than my current salary. But...the move would limit my ability to own a home as I do now, the cost of living is outrageous, no state income tax (current 44K base) and only pays 1K more than my current salary. The location (700 miles away) is not where I would prefer to go, but it may be a golden opportunity. I also get the feeling that if I decline, I will not be offered anything else in the future. Any and all advice would be welcomed.

I think you' re correct all across the board.  There' s a potential opportunity down the road that may or may not occur.  You can' t be a homeowner in a high cost of living area.  If you turn it down you' re done for promotions in this company.

You have to decide which things are most important to you and how much of a gambler you are.

I totally agree with Tess.  You' re taking a risk by accepting the promotion, but it' s not a life or death sort of risk.  What' s the worst thing that can happen?  The move doesn' t pay off like you anticipate, but all sorts of other opportunities may come along, with with your present employer or with another, or you can initiate a change by looking for other employment opportunities.
