How Long Do I Have to Respond to OfferI am expecting an offer from "Job #2" today, but am still waiting for a second interview with "Job #1". (The second interview for Job #1 is scheduled for next week. Two of the three interviewers for Job #2 have said they'd like me... so I'm just waiting on the third's opinion of me.) IF I receive an offer from #2 today, how do I professionally let them know that I would like some time to make a decision, and await the results of Job #1? I've never been in the position of wanting to work at two different companies before! Of course, there are reasons why #1 is #1! But, my savings is running low and I don't want to miss the boat.. but being a "job hopper" is definitely worse! I value my professional reputation and being a loyal employee! So, how long is acceptable to ask an employer to wait for your response?! 2 days, 3 days...a week?! Thanks! You need to reverse it and ask them when they need answer, then give one by that time.

Ah, so simple! Excellent! (Amazing what a little stress and a missed meal can do!) What you should say is, "I'd like a few days to consider your offer, but when would like a definitive answer from me?" Whatever they tell you, you should live with. In other words, make it clear that you'd appreciate a little time to think about the offer, but that you want to live within their time-frame. Make sense? Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert | |
