Is it OK to apply for a position IF....
I found a job that I am very much interested and qualified for. However, the maximum salary range is currently $500 less than what I currently make. Obviously, I would like to make more. Do/will employers go outside of that range if they find the "right" employee? Is it worth applying for?
Most new employees do not come in at the top of the range. They come in at the mid-point. If the top of the range is below what you're making now, (not to mention no where near an increase) it is unlikely that you'll end up where you should be (10-15% more than you're making now). If, however, you desperately want this job for some other reason and don't care about the salary, then by all means, put in for it and see how it goes.
Tess If they found the "right" employee, and assuming that the "right" employee was a perfect fit for the job to be done, they might pay pay close to the top of the range, but seldom, if ever, more than the published range. Anyway, even if you are the "right" employee for the job, they're not going to offer you a salary that's at least 10% to 15% more than you're earning now - which is the salary range you should be anticipating in order to justify a job switch. So, no, it's probably not worth applying for... Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert
