negotiate 1$ more worth it
I was offered an average hourly amount for a part-time job. Being that I was used to a pay rate of 1$ more for another part-time job I just was laid-off from 5 mo earlier. Should I ask the hr rep if the hourly rate is negotiable...and if it is ask for 1$more an hour stating the reasons of no benefits for part-time employees and that I have more than 3 yrs experience or just leave it alone?
With no disrespect intended, and particularly since you haven't worked for 5 months, I would not rock this boat over a buck an hour and run the risk of having the offer withdrawn. I think you need the job more than you need the extra dollar per hour. Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert Paul, I have read several other comments you have made for other questions posted and for the most part, I have to hand it to you. I think you give wonderful advice in a non-biased way. I've worked in HR for over 10 years and your replies are dead on. Keep up the good work! Now for sunflower in office, please don't take offense to what I'm saying either, but for the past 5 months you haven't been used to that salary so I'm not sure I would make an issue over a dollar. On the other hand, I don't think I would stop looking either. A part time position with a dollar less per hour and no benefits sounds more like a stepping stone than a place to root for a while. Thanks for the nice comments and no offense taken whatsoever! Perhaps I should have continued my response by recommending that sunflower take the job AND continue looking, but since he/she has been out of work for 5 months, my thought was that generating an income stream was the first priority, even if it's for a buck less per hour than remaining unemployed. Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert I agree with Paul. After tax that's only .66 or so difference. Not worth risking the offer.
