I got an offer but...

Hi everyone,

I was offer a position today paying 5k less than what I was anticipating but paying 10k than what I'm getting now.  This is the first time I'm not using a recruiter to negotiate on my behalf.  The company has already emailed me my offer letter, so I want to know if I can still negotiate my salary?   I'm entitled to a pay increase based on my evaluation in 1/08, so should wait until then to see if I get the extra 5k?

I interviewed with the company so long ago that I actually can't remember if we ever discussed salary.   HELP!!!!

Thanks in advance.

If the $10K increase is at least 10% than you're earning now, which I'll bet it is, take the job!  Taken as a whole, if this is a job and the salary and benefit package you'd otherwise be pleased to accept, accept it!  Never, never, never try to negotiate more money just for the sake of negotiating.  This sounds like a very nice bump in salary to me.  Besides, I honestly don't think you'd be able to negotiate another 50% increase in starting salary before you've proven you can do the job - and do it well.  I'd wait for the January '08 review - that's plenty of time to demonstrate that you're worth more based on your actual job performance.
