Salary andamp; negotiationI need some advice. I have had two job offers. First of all I took a job with a temp agency on a temp basis to see if this job was going to work out for me. So far I have enjoyed working here and have been very happy. I had a offer with a company who I interviewed a yr ago and turned them down for another job. The problem is that this will be my 2nd offer to work for this company. So considering the current temp job hadn't offered me the position I accepted the job offer. Now the current job (temp job) has offered me the job and I feel pressed for time. I have tried to weight my options out. My current job has excellent benefits and room for growth w/in the company, the 1st job I accepted matched my 9% pay increase but the benefits are not that good. Please help! I am running out of time.
I would also consider the fact that you have built up some organizational value with the company you are temp-ing at versus a company that knows nothing beyond a few interviews. Additionally, every company has their idiosyncracies, you know what they are for the company you are at now, but not for the other. Don't just look at the salary, if your medical costs at company 1 are $100 a month and company 2 $400 a month, then you are essentially getting $300 per month more in take home pay regardless of the salary.
If I understand what you've written, you've been offered a full-time job with by the company for whom you were temping, but you've already accepted another job offer? If that correct, I think you should just withdraw, very apologetically, your acceptance, expressing regret for any inconvenience you've caused, explaining that a much better opportunity has presented itself which you genuinely feel it the right career move for you. Thank them again for their interest in you and take the permanent position with the company for whom you've been temping. Make sense? Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert
Yes, thank you so much for your response. I agree money is not everything and company 1 (temp job) has excellent benefits and I know their organizational values of the company. Company 2, I actually didn't think they would take my 9% pay increase but they did. I understand I should accept between a 10-15% increase but they now have offered me a 33% increase which is far and beyond what I expected. I am tempted to take the 33% increase in pay from the 2nd company (who's job offer I accepted 1st) and also because I don't know when I will be able to see that kind of $$$ from company 1. I have to make a decision soon. I have researched both companies and they are both well-established but company 2 is offering me more $$$ with a drawback of not very good benefits and company 1 offers good benefits, growth w/in the company, drawback is that the pay is actually less than the 25th % of pay salary range and I have no room to negotiate. I hope this makes sense.
even though this is my 2nd opportunity to work for the 2nd company? Plus now they have offered me a 33% increase to what I am making now vs. the temp job who's salary is less than the 25% salary range. I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks
I haven't heard from you and I was hoping to hear back from you in regards to the 33% increase in pay with the 1st job offer vs. staying at my current job (thru temp agency). I hope to hear from anyone soon!
Assuming all other things are equal, it would be pretty difficult to turn down a 33% salary increase! But, then again, money isn't everything. You're in the enviable position of going from temp to full-time with a 9% increase or honoring your acceptance of the other job for a 33% increase. Based on this new information, the 33% increase sounds like the route to choose, unless there or other factors involved that would make going from temp to full-time a better career move - to some extent, you win either way! Still a tough call, though! Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert | |
