Offer dilema

I have a two part question. I recently received an offer for a company that has a deadline of the end of this week for a decision. There is another company that I like better and might get an offer( I have had 2 interviews that went well). The company with the offer on the table has a four week pre employment liscensing, classroom, and training period for which time I will not be paid.

My first question is should I contact the other company and let them know my situation?

My second question is if I accept the offer and during the unpaid training I receive the other offer how out of line am I if I end my training and accept the more desireable position? The unpaid training also has some out of pocket costs for liscensing.

Answer to the first question is yes, you should talk to your preferred employer. Explain to them that you have been offered a position but are more interested in their position and ask whether they are planning to make a decision soon. If they really want you, they will try to get you on board.

If they can not commit, go ahead and do the training (if you want the other job). You aren't an employee (or at least a PAID employee). Just make sure that you don't sign something stating theat you would have to pay for the training they provide if you walk away.

I think you have to treat each of the two employment opportunities as totally stand-alone situations.  If you decide to take the job that requires a 4-week unpaid training program, and if the other opportunity becomes available, you can easily quit the unpaid training job and accept the other offer.  Sine this is a somewhat unusual situation, I think you could, very tactfully, explain your situation to the employer you'd rather work for - making it very clear that you're not trying to pressure that at all, but felt they should be aware of the other situation - and see what happens.  I would not, however, decline the first job in anticipation of being offered the more attractive position.  It's possible that you might not be offer the job you really want and you could be left with no offers at all.  Make sense?
