Question regarding pre planned vacation

Hi all. I have a quick question regarding a pre-planned vacation.

I went through two interviews with a local company and was offered the position last Wednesday. When offered the position I was contacted by someone in HR, not the hiring manager, and I accepted immediately. I know that I probably should have mentioned the vacation to her after the position was offered, but it slipped my mind. I later called back and left a message, but failed to receive a response.

I understand that I may not be able to go on this vacation, but I would really like to since the flight and hotel accommodations have already been paid for. I am scheduled to start this job in two weeks and have three options to go about asking for the time off. First, I can call my contact in HR and mention this issue to her. Second, I can contact my manager that interviewed me for the position and speak to her about this. And finally, I can wait until my start date/orientation to mention it, though I doubt this would be the best choice.

If I were allowed to take the trip, I would only miss three days of work and I surely would not expect to get paid for those days. The trip is scheduled for the third week of May. Any advice will be much appreciated!

If I were you, I' d go to my manager first and just be honest, say that you forgot to mention a pre-planned vacation coming up in May that you' re already paid for and say, if there are no objections, you' d be happy to take the time as an unpaid leave, since the vacation was already planned before you took the job.  I' d also say that I hoped it wouldn' t' t be causing any inconvenience, but that you' d really like to go.  You could even offer to make up any missed work, if necessary. Then ask what you should do about notifying HR, assuming your manager doesn' t have a problem with it, which I' ll bet she won' t.  Stuff like this happens all the time.  I wouldn' t worry about asking.
