Questions on Benefits at AT andT

Hi.  Anyone here work at AT & T (not the cell phone company)?  I got some benefit info as part of an offer late yesterday and have not had a chance to discuss with the manager in detail yet.   Regarding vacation they said 10 days of annual vacation and additional 7 days of accrued paid time off.  Are you accruing those extra seven days from day one or like some companies you have to wait 5 years before you qualify for another week of vacation? Also as anyone ever had a heath insurance program where your premiums are paid but there is a $1000 deductible? I have always had a premium with no deductible.

The best thing to do is simply ask about the accrued vacation days.  Regarding health insurance, fewer and fewer companies are offering employees first-dollar coverage - it' s just too expensive.  Anyway, the rapidly emerging idea behind the deductible is to cover major health costs, not to cover every little trip to the doctor for a case of the sniffles, no offense intended.  The general belief is that if the health coverage plan has no deductible, people tend to abuse it and run to the doctor or emergency room for colds which will last about a week with treatment and about seven days without treatment.

As Paul said, ask about how the PTO is accrued, but understand that is not an extra week of vacation.  That is sick time, have to go to DMV for half a day time, my child is home sick with the flu time.  There is no extra "sick" time when you have PTO.  That' s it for whatever reason you need it for.

I don' t know of any major company that offers an insurance plan with absolutely NO deductible anymore. And it sounds like you' re saying you don' t have to contribute anything to it?  That' s a GREAT deal even with a $1000 deductible!
