Salary dilemma

Hello Everyone,

I have a slight dilemma. I had a telephone interview yesterday with a recruiter from HR in regards to a Sr. Administrative Assistant position I applied for. When she asked me how much was I looking for, I told her between 40K-42K. She told me she was going to contact one of the director' s & get back to me with a day to interview in person. Well, I just found out my interview is this Tuesday. I' m wondering if I' m asked what salary am I looking for, is it too late to mention that I' m looking for a salary between 40K-45K? If so, in the future when I' m asked how much am I looking for, what answer can I give them?

It is difficult for us to tell you "ask for this sum the next time you' ll be in an interview". As far as I' m concerned, you have already stated the range of salary you are expecting (between 40 and 42ks, right?) so stating in the interview you want more is like you have changed your mind. The fact that you have stated the first range might be the reason for which you have been called for an interview, you realize that. If you change the initial agreement, they might feel you are not a reliable person.

The only genuine basis on which you can propose a higher salary range  is after an actual salary offer has been made.  The presumption would be that once you know more about the job and it' s actual requirements, you could politely ask if their offer is negotiable and see what they say.  However, if they offer you, let' s say $42K, unless the job really does require more than you originally expected, I think you might be on thin ice trying to negotiate more for doing the job you actually were expecting to do.  Nonetheless, if their offer is negotiable and you' re asked what salary you have in mind, I think you could counter by saying that based on your more complete understanding of the job and it' s requirements, you were anticipating an offer in the $44K to $45K range, and see what happens.
