Expected Pay Rate QuestionToday I received an email from a recruiter for a job. It included the below about "expected pay". What is the best way to handle this type of request? Stating a minimum you will except or stating a salary range? "Please attach your updated resume and Please quote your expected pay rate for this position and send it to me ASAP." I usually state open or negotiable. You should give a range, the bottom of which is the minimum you would really accept. I generally would say, especially when the posted job description is sketchy, "My expected salary range is from $X to $Y, depending on more specific information about the position (or, "depending on a thorough understanding of the position's tasks & responsbilities," or, "dependent on the exact scope of the position"). That way, if they've advertised the job as one thing, and you go to an interview and the job turns out to be more demanding or wider in scope & responsibility, you have given yourself--but only if you need it--some wiggle room. If the job actually is as advertised, then you will still have some leeway if you've stated a range rather than a number.. How can you know exactly what you would want until you find out more about the job? That is my feeling. And, you surely cannot pin your answer down to one number--that's unreasonable. Based on the presumption that your working now, I would strongly recommend that you provide an anticipated salary range that' s at least 10% to 15% more than you' re earning now. Here' s exactly what I' d write: "Depending on the requirements of the position, my anticipated salary is negotiable within the $X to $Y range." I would NOT duck the question with a "depends on the job" sort of non-response. | |
