Salary range request

I' m in the process of relocating from NYC to Boston, MA and have been asked what salary range I' m seeking.  I' ve visited web sites like Salary.com and the range produced on the report I requested was $70K - $100K.  My current salary in the mid $70' s.  The position I' m interested is very similar to the one I currently have in terms of scope & responsibility.

My questions are: 1) How much faith can I put in web site reports like the one I received from Salary.com?  2) Should I narrow the range from the report more inline with my current salary?  3) Should my current salary represent the bottom of the range I send?

The bottom range you should send should be a little bit higher than the current salary you have. You shouldn' t trust too much websites. Instead, you can have some research of your own, in the respective company and in the respective area. Take into account other factors as well. Good luck!

While salary sites tend to run high, in your case, where the two cities you mention are probably above average in terms of salary, you may be close to reality.

I would still look at the same or similar jobs in the Boston area that require the same or similar education and experience and see what they are paying. That will give you an idea of what the salary range should be.

Since you are already relocating, it may not make much difference whether the job pays less... you are on your way here and need a job. If the job does not pay what you need/want, you may need to look at higher level (and paying) jobs or reset your salary expectations to the lower amount.

In addition to what Chet wrote, the general rule-of-thumb to go by is that it ordinarily makes no sense to switch jobs for a salary that' s not at least 10% to 15% more than you' re earning now.  However, since you' re moving anyway, I think you could very easily say that your anticipated salary is negotiable within the $70K to $80K range.  If you think you can command a salary within the $75K to around the $85K range, go for it.  I think it' s just by chance that the salary surveys you' ve looked at are within your actual range - most people feel they tend to run high.
