Salary below average...

I am in the interview process for a Director of Admissions and Development position.  I have 3 years experience in the field...  This IS my dream job.  Problem:  The hiring salary is only $40,000..... That is about what I make in my current position.   I have checked the salary calculator and found that the average salary for Admissions is $50,000 and the Development is $80,000.  I was hoping for somewhere around $55,000 as a starting salary.  How do I tell these people that I am disappointed in their starting salary because it is WAY below the average?  And what should I do to get them closer to my number?  I really want this job!  I don't want to price myself out of it, but they are crazy if they think they can hire someone for such a small amount....

First, lets begin with the understanding that external salary averages, however they' re compiled, have absolutely nothing to do with the value this particular employer has chosen to place on this particular job or the offer that they' ve made to you based on your particular qualifications for the job.  At this point, all  you can do is politely ask if their initial offer is negotiable and see what they say.  If it' s not, you may have to continue your job search.  If the offer is negotiable and you' re asked what salary you have in mind, I' d counter with an anticipated salary range.  Normally, it only makes sense to switch jobs when you can increase your salary by at least 10% to 15%.  Therefore, I' d reply by saying that I was anticipating a salary at least in the $44K to $46K range.  I think it would be a terrible mistake to say that you were disappointed with their offer because it was way below the average salary that somebody totally unconnected with this business has come up with!  On the other hand, if you can make the case that your qualifications for this job a pretty much a perfect match for the qualifications of the job - in terms of experience, training, past job performance, skills, and education, you might be able to go a little higher, but I seriously doubt that you' re going to be able to convince them that they should increase their offer by $15,000 because that' s what a salary survey said the job should pay.  If the salary offered is negotiable at all, it will be on basis of how well your qualifications for the job match the requirements of the job.
