Should I negotiate

Hello!

Currently making $62,500 working as a project controller.  I interviewed for another job and received a "Verbal Offer".   All they need to do is check references, verify creditials, and take a drug test.  Of course I would NEVER give notice at the current job until I have something in writing.  Let's face it, nothing is official yet.

Now comes negotiating salary.  The company in question pays salaries in a given range depending on the position.  This position pays a minimum of $68,000 and a maximum of $88,000 (I have inside sources that work in HR).  I gave them a range of $73,000 - $78,000.  Truth be told, there are so many positive things about the job I would be willing to move for the exact same salary I make now!!!!!!!!!!  So depending on the offer, should I just accept whatever they give me?  Do I make them wait a day or 2 for a decision?  smile
This is really a win-win situation as the reason for switching jobs extends far beyond $$$.  Although more salary is also a good thing.

The general rule-of-thumb is it' s ordinarily not worth switching jobs for a salary that' s at least 10% to 15% more than you' re earning now, all other things being equal.  A 10% increase would take you to $68,750.  If you' re offered at least that much, take the  job.  Never, never, never try to negotiate more money just for the sake of negotiating.  There' s also no reason to by coy about an offer that' s at least 10% more than you' re earning now, base on what you wrote.  Take the job!
