hiring process

Curious...how long approximately is the hiring process? I know they do vary from company to company. I had an interview last week that went very well, sent the thank you's.. They seemed very interested and we got a long really really well. I got an email today from them saying that it was great to talk to me and they are moving forward with their process through the next several weeks and if I don't hear from them in 3 weeks then feel free to contact them. Is this a blow off? I only ask because I have another job that I am being offered and want to know if several weeks is typical for the hiring process (of a major company) or a nice way to say "We'll be sending your rejection letter in the mail within 3 weeks."

Any advice?

It's not at all unusual for a hiring process to take several weeks, or longer....

I don't think I'd put all my eggs in this one basket, and you may not get an offer at all. But it is very impressive that you received a follow-up e-mail from them apprising you of the status and saying that you could contact them again. Most companies don't bother with any kind of follow-up at all these days.

If you have another, firm offer, accept or reject it on its own merits, not because you are "holding out" for this one.

Thanks- good advice. And it did go well; I'm glad it's normal for this process to take awhile. What you said also about accepting the other position on it's own merits, I guess my doubts answered my questioning it all along too.

thanks again!

I totally agree with Anne Marie, (rhyming not intended).  The hiring process is so unpredictable that to suggest a "normal" time frame would be really pointless.  They' ve given you a rough time frame and they' ve made it pretty clear that you can recontact them if you haven' t heard - I would take that as a good sign.  Some employers make hiring decisions in a few days, others can drag it out for several weeks.  How long it takes should not be viewed as a reflection of your prospects of being offered a job.  Continue your job search in the meantime, however.
