When to Ask,

When is the appropriate time to ask if the financial offer/package is negotiable?

1) Immediately when the offer is made?

2) After a brief "I need to think about it" time period?

I've already done my research and have a salary range in mind. Is it better to just cut to the chase up front when the offer is made or give it some breathing room to be considerate of the offer being made?

Thanks in advance!

When you know all the facts.

If you don't know what the benefits, responsibilities, other compensation, etc... are then it is too early to talk about negotiating salary. However if the salary isn't even close to the bottom end of your salary range, you might as well address it immediately.

If you know you' re going to negotiate, why keep them waiting around?  I see so many people that say they want to think about it for a week (thus putting the employer on hold all that time), THEN come back and say they want to negotiate.  Frankly, if I was hiring you, that would annoy me.

You' ve got all that time from when you first apply, through the interviews to decide if you want the job and what salary range you can accept.  Unless they throw you a curve ball like a different job or work location or it involves a move or something, what' s to think about?  By then you should know what your acceptable parameters are and whether this fits in.

I' d much rather hear right away that you need to negotiate so I can either get started on that or move on to someone else.

In addition to what Chet and Tess wrote, both of who I agree with, I would only add that if you' re made an offer that you' d otherwise be happy to accept - accept it!  Never try to negotiate more money just for the sake of negotiating.  If it' s a solid salary offer and a good benefit package - accept it.  On the other hand, if you believe the salary offer is too low, start by politely asking if their initial offer is negotiable.
