Job Offer Confusion

I think you can call immediately and withdraw your acceptance of the $15 per hour job.  Say another opportunity has come along that' s more in line with your career goals, that you weren' t expecting it, and that you' re very sorry for any inconvenience you may have caused and, finally, thank them profusely for the opportunity they offered you.  You don' t want to burn a bridge unnecessarily.

Take the $17 per hour job, go to the second interview, and see what happens.  What you DON' T want to happen is to be left with no job at all.  There' s no guarantee that the BIG TIME corporation will offer you an even more attractive salary.

Yes, just don' t tell anybody that you' re doing it.

Accept the $17 job. Rescind your acceptance of the $15 job.

Do the second interview and determine whether they will make an offer. If they don't, you have the $17 job. If they make an acceptable offer, take it and rescind the $17 job.

Although it may not matter at this point, I' d take the job offered at $15 bucks per hour.  If a better offer should come along, you can always resign and take it, but at this moment we don' t know if either of the other two opportunities will result in a job offer.  If you hold out for either of them and neither one turns into a job offer, you' ll be out of luck big time.  So, in my opinion, I' d take the offer you have in front of you and see what happens with the other two.  We can help you if a better opportunity comes along within the next few weeks and you decide you want to quit your new job and take another - it could be tricky and you don' t want to burn any bridges unnecessarily.  Make sense?

Thank you for your advice. On Friday, I accepted the offer for the job that pays $15/hr. I have to fax the acceptance letter by today.

Here' s the what happened today: I received a job offer from the one that pays $17/hr!!! They want me to start next week!  AND: I got a call from that BIG TIME Corporation, they said they liked me and they want me to come in for a second interview to meet the Executive Vice President of the company!

I was ready to take the $15/hr job and about to fax the acceptance letter by this afternoon.

Now I' m confused again!

Can I go back and take back my acceptance? Does the verbal acceptance count?

Should I take this job or the other one that pays $17/hr

Should I go to that second interview?

Thanks so much for your help!!!

Yes, one bird in the hand... That's why you should look for a job when you don't need to, not when you're desperate for a pay check.

I agree with Tess, as far as the first job goes.  As to the ' big-time' job, a big company doesn' t always mean more growth.  The days of starting in the mail room and moving up to CEO are long gone.  Big companies are very much constrained by credentials.

Over the years, I' ve know aerospace engineers who did well without a degree.  I only know one of them who' s still working and he' s an old guy.  They aren' t promoting technicians without engineering degrees to engineer anymore.  Likewise for accountants and other professions. A small company is much more likely to promote a sharp clerk to office manager than a big one.

Please help me. I have a current offer that pays $15/hr with a company that has a limited potential for advancement, probably just up to a managerial position. They want an answer by today.

I have another job prospect that is telling me that they want me, but has not contacted me with an offer. The ballpark figure they gave me is $17/hr and it has a limited potential for advancement too. They might call me within the next week.

The one that I really want is this big-time, big corporate job that pays less than the other two, but it has a huge potential for advancement, since it is a big corporation. This one has a really good benefit package compared to the other two.

Should I take the 1st job offer or should I wait for the other ones? I am so confused because I need the money now, but I also need to think about the future.

If you need the money, take the offer that you have today.  Call them right now and say so.  Neither of the other two may ever come through.  If the $17 comes through, it isn' t much more and doesn' t offer a lot more in advancement so you should probably stay put.  If the spectacular one comes through and is a lot better all the way around, you make this the one time in your career that you do a very short hop, apologize all over yourself to the $15 employer and move on.  In the meantime, you' ve for sure got the $15 and can stay there and be happy if nothing else turns up.
