Salary

Thursday, March 29, 2007

After exhausting all my resources while looking for a job, I am on my last penny, and on my own. I have been on several interviews that were further from my home than I would like to drive, at the salary the company offers for the position. Problem is, I don' t find this out until after I get there, and fill out an extensive application. With gas prices @ $2.54 a gal, I barely scrape enough together to get to my interviews.

Here is my question:  Is there a nice and professional way to ask the employer when they call to schedule an interview, how much the position pays?  In the past, this has backfired on me, because the employer seemed  put out, insulted, annoyed & irked that I would even ask that question without coming in for an interview. Please let me know if there is a way to ask politely how much a position pays before I drive 32miles for $11.00 an hr. I' m worth much more then that as a medical assistant but wouldn' t  mind that pay if it was close to my home.

Your Help IS MUCH appreciated!

Ask the hiring manager in a polite, professional, information-seeking tone: "Yes, can you give me a general idea of what salary range is associated with this position?" Then schedule the interview. Or not.

There' s no reason not to ask, but don' t mention mileage and gas costs. Besides, a 32 mile commute is nothing these days. Just say "I' m very interested in talking to you about this position but don' t want to waste your time. Can you give me an idea of the salary range for this position?"

Both Chet and Ignatz, (I love that name), have offered good ways to ask what the salary range is.  I think either one is fine.  The essence of the inquiry is to ASK the prospective employer if he or she can give you an IDEA of what the budgeted range for the position is.
