Background Check

I was wondering how long it takes to run a background check. The position that I have been conditionally hired for (pending background check) says they do a criminal, credit and they verify employment and education. They also do a drug test.

They told me on Monday that they would do that but I have not heard anything since. In this day and age wouldn' t it only take a few minutes?

Should I call and find out what' s going on it I don' t hear anything by Thursday or Friday or should I just sit tight?

I would give them a week and then follow up with a phone call to HR, just asking them where are we in the process and if they need any additional information. I do agree with you that in today's day and age it should not take very long, but you are forgetting the human factor. I know someone who is in process of getting the job with one company. She called them after a week thinking that they are already working on her background check (that's what they told her at the end of the interview). When she called, the HR lady said that she can't find her application and if it would be possible for her to come to fill out another one ??!! So, follow up with the phone call.

Some of the background stuff you mentioned can be done instantly, but court checks in particular can take several days - depending on what' s being checked and where.  In some jurisdictions is can take a couple of weeks!  It' s usually not the employer' s fault, because it' s up to the court clerk, in many cases, to provide the information - even if there' s no information to provide.   If I were you, I' d wait until Monday, April 2nd, to call and politely inquire about the status of your application.

Thanks,

Do you think it' s best to call the HR person on Monday or the person who would be my boss?  I have another interview with another company, should I continue with the interview? This process has really put my life on HOLD!

I think you should call the person with whom you' ve had the most contact.  I' d also proceed with the other employment opportunity - just in case the first opportunity doesn' t come through.  Zat help?
