training opportunity job offer

Dear All,

I got a job offer. During my conversation with the company' s VP, I negotiated training opportunities. He promised that company will pay for the membership and conferences for the professional association. As this is a small company, I don' t believe this offer is recorded in company' s policy. So can I ask HR to write it down in my offer letter to be the prove once I come on board? Will this offend them? (I already orally accepted the offer)

Thanks!

Instead of doing that, if I were you, I' d compose an e-mail outlining YOUR understanding of what you were offered and simply ask the recipient to confirm it back to you.  That' s not asking too much and I doubt that it will offend anybody.  All you' re doing is writing down what you were told the deal was and asking them to confirm it so YOU' RE sure you have all the details correct.  Make sense?

I did it as you suggested. The HR manager begged the question. He answered all the questions except "training and membership". Shall I follow up with her to ask him again? I don' t know how to word it. Frustrating!

If these two things are very important to you, and were serious factors in your accepting the position, then, yes, I would politely follow up again. As in, "Thank you for confirming those items that you addressed in your e-mail. However, I am now somewhat confused, because during our personal meeting, you assured me that the company would be providing the training and sponsoring the professional membership necessary to the position. These were not re-confirmed in your e-mail. Did you simply overlook these, or are there any issues relating to these items? I would just like to make sure that my understanding of all the terms is accurate."

Something along those lines. Don' t accuse the guy of purposely avoiding the issue, but don' t let him off the hook, either. Put it back on yourself as much as possible, without sounding like a dunderhead! I would be a bit nervous about this, myself, and can understand why you would want some verification.

To expand on what Anne Marie said just a little, now that you have a reply, albeit an incomplete from HR, I' d CALL, not e-mail and ask for clarification on the training and membership issues.  I' d call so I could thank whoever replied and, almost as an aside, ask for the clarification you would like to have - assuming either or both are really critical to you.  If neither are deal breakers, I wouldn' t push it.
