Good raises no title changeI have been at my company for 2 years now with 6 years prior relevant experience. I'm confused as to why I would get excellent reviews with high raises- 10% the first year and 7% the 2nd year, but no career advancement. I have asked for a title change, but HR says my current job description matches my current title. I am satisfied with my salary, but I need a better title for my resume to show career advancement. I would love to hear your opinion as to why a company would grant such high raises and give excellent performance reviews but no title change. Thanks.
In a word? Because you're doing a good job as (whatever your title is). You're not doing a different job (the title you want). There may be some overlap, in that your current job may have you do some of the other things from time to time, but as HR said, your current description matches your job. I'm wondering why you think you deserve a title change/promotion after only 2 years? If you're doing well and getting good reviews and raises, why are you making a stink over this and risking all the good will you've built up? Tess I totally agree with Tess here! Why are you so hung up on titles, and why are you expecting a promotion with new title with every raise? That's not how things work. You are clearly doing a great job in your position, as evidenced by your generous raises (incredibly generous, based on today's percentages). Your employer clearly values that; what's your beef? You can't expect to show leaps of progression after just two years, and maybe your company simply doesn't have a "spot" to move you up into. You salary progression and performance reviews alone show progression and competence. I don't blame you for wanting to think of the future, but two years does not a career make. Nor do companies give promotions just because you're doing a great job in your current job! Cool your jets; if you come across like a whiner, you'll decrease, not increase, your chances of a promotion.
Thank you for your responses. I guess I am hung up on the title because of my ego. I have 6 years prior relevant experience before this job, and the title I have is somewhat entry-level. I've never received a promotion before and I was hoping I would finally be promoted. The company I was at before decided to give me a higher-ranked title after 1 year, but it was not a promotion. This is a small fast growing company and there is room to move up. I assumed since there was no one else in my department, and I'm doing a great job at my current job, and the salary is there, that they would grant me a title to go with it. I don't want to seem like a whiner to them. I like my job a lot and want to stay. So, I will cool my jets as you say and wait it out. Thanks again for your reponse.
Hi again, It sounds like you have a great track with a company that has a lot of potential. Don't worry--keep up the good work, and you'll get where you want to be--if not with this company eventually, then somewhere else. Just keep doing your job well.... I was with a place for five years once, and never got a change in title, but got raises and was put on an executive track--would've been the company's 2nd female VP (the 1st was the owner's wife--LOL!) if I hadn't quit. So, really, within the same company, titles don't necessarily mean a thing! I think I do a great job and my title hasn't changed in over 25 years! I'm still stuck with the dumb old title of "president." The point is you've been doing a great job, too, but the same job, for the past two years. Title changes don't come with salary increases for doing the same job even better this year than last. Your time will come to be promoted to a different job. When that happens, you'll get a spandy new title that will show that you're moving up the corporate ladder. Be patient! Rome wasn't built in a day... Paul W. Barada The Negotiation Expert | |
