Lower than I expected...
I just got offered a position, but the starting salary is only $1000 more a year than I make now. I want the job, but I don't know how to go about negoitating a higher salary without sounding greedy. Any tips? Thanks! Sure! Start by politely asking if their initial salary offer is negotiable and see what the say. If it's not negotiable, I'd be inclined to pass because, as a general rule, it doesn't ordinarily make sense to switch jobs for less than an increase in salary of at least 10% to 15%. If their offer is negotiable, and if you're asked what salary you have in mind, I'd counter with a salary range that does reflect, at the low end, an increase over what you're presently earning of 10% and, at the high end, 15% more than you're earning now. But I also think you have to be prepared to state with some specificity why the job itself will be worth more to the employer because of how well your past job performance, experience, skills, training, and/or education match the requirements of the job. The idea is to be able to show how your qualifications for the job will make it more valuable to the employer. All other things being equal, if you can't increase your salary by at least 10%, I'd stay put. A one grand raise is only worth about nineteen bucks per week BEFORE taxes. Paul W.
