I have taken some time off since my last postion (2/2006) for family reasons only working some contract work for 5 months.....should I change my style of resume to tone down dates of employment and focus more on skills?

Are you considering using a functional resume style because you want to focus more on your skills? I don' t think that would be necessary (hiring managers normally do not like functional resumes). Also, it sounds like you haven' t been out of work for that long that you need to focus on skills instead of work history. Plus, you can highlight your consulting work during this time period.
