Need Advice, Please!I have a question on how I should list my most recent job history on my resume. I spent 7 years with 1 company, then I took a job which didn't work out and we mutually parted ways after just 5 months, for the past year and a half, I've been doing handyman type work. Now, I'm in computer training school and looking to change careers into the IT field. My question is this, how do I list my self employment work? Or should I not even bother since it wouldn't be relevant to any jobs I'd be seeking? If I don't list it, how do I explain the gap in my employment? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Dan Here is my current resume: QUALIFICATIONS § 6+ years experience in customer service, sales, and sales management § An organized and detail oriented manager, able to prioritize and delegate tasks effectively to ensure timely project completion within a team environment § A top sales performer § Proficient in Microsoft Windows 95/ 98/ 2000/XP, MS Office 2003/2007(Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, Power Point), Internet Explorer, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe PhotoShop EDUCATION § The XXXXX Institute, XXXXXX, NJ; Computer Networking & Security § XXXXX County College, XXXXXX, NJ; Liberal Arts § XXXX High School - XXXXXX, NJ EMPLOYMENT HISTORY 5/06 – Pres Self Employed 1/06 – 5/06 Project /Program Manager, xxxxxxxxxx, Inc ...[Message truncated]
Hi Dan, Create two employment sections, one called something like "IT/Project Management Experience" and the other called "Additional Experience." You can move your handyman work to the "Additional" section so that any related experience is listed first. Good luck in your career transition! Kim Isaacs The Resume Expert | |
