dumbing down resumesI am wondering if there are anyone out there who are dumbing down their resumes in order to get “survival” jobs? If so, do you have any tips how to best do this? Thanks Dumbing down resumes... Sigh. I am currently at this point. The last job I held I worked 60 hours a week, and it left me no personal time. I am now looking for something a little more simple, with less responsibility and a normal 40 hour work week. The problem is that I have way too much experience for these jobs, and keep getting the "no thanks / overqualified" answer despite having applied to 50 ++ jobs. I have decided to give it exactly one more week, and then I will start tweaking my resume. I will definitely start by removing some titles, and responsibilities, and add some low-key responsibilities such as customer service, data entry, administrative duties etc. I was reading the blog on lying on your resume earlier today, and everyone seems to be doing it anyway. I don't see the big deal, as long as you don't complete make stuff up. What't wrong with tweaking a bit? I don't know what your background is, but definitely change titles, and if you have more than a bachelors degree remove that too. If you're holding a master's degree in economics and are looking for a survival job, most employers will think something is wrong with you. Keep things simple and short. A long resume is another tell-tale sign of either bull**** or overqualification. Your responsibilities should be very basic and easy to transfer to your desired position. Good luck!
I've "adjusted" my resume to dumb it down. I was employed by a company for 27 years and was making a decent salary. Then 10 months ago, the department I was in closed. I was lucky enough to get another job with the company but after 4 STRESSFUL months, I quit. The job was not a good fit. I am currently in another job that is better but not by much. Needless to say, I am now looking again. I have applied at 2 companies that I would love to work for. Both companies called me last week to ask me what my salary range was because the jobs were considered entry-level. I realized that when I applied but I just want to get my foot in the door. I've had to dumb down my resume but I can't say yet if that has helped. I've been honest to tell the recruiter that its not the salary so much, but the entire benefit package that is important to me. | |
